Hanging out at the beach with the kids. Throwing summer barbecues with family. Enjoying a dinner out with friends. Most of us live for these special times with our kids, spouses, family, and friends. The National Safety Council wants to make sure you have plenty of these moments for years to come, and that’s why they observe June as National Safety Month. The National Safety Council has been America’s leading safety advocacy organization for more than 100 years. The theme of 2015 is “What I Live For.”
Increasing Awareness of Five Problem Areas
This June, the National Safety Council encourages you to share your passions. The organization will be providing checklists, posters, tip sheets, and more — all designed to help people stay safe at home, at the office, and in their daily lives. This year, the Council is focused on five significant areas where accidents often occur:
- Prescription painkiller abuse: More than 15 million Americans regularly abuse prescription medications, and more people overdose on prescription drugs than any other kind of drug. In some cases, physicians and pharmacies are negligent in addressing risk factors in patients, which may contribute to addiction or drug abuse.
- Transportation safety: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), driver distraction is the leading factor in most crashes. In 2014, there were more than 53,000 traffic crashes caused by distracted driving in Kentucky, resulting in over 14,000 injuries. As the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet notes, “one text or call could wreck it all.”
- Ergonomics: Ergonomic conditions are disorders of the soft tissues often caused by factors such as overexertion while lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or reaching. Overexertion is the third-leading cause of unintentional injuries in the United States, and millions of people will experience an ergonomic injury in the workplace during their lifetimes.
- Emergency preparedness: Daily routines can be disrupted by weather events. It’s important to be prepared for emergencies by creating family plans, keeping first aid kits in your house and car, and safeguarding key documents in a locked, fireproof box.
- Slips, trips, and falls: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that falls are still a leading cause of serious injuries. Whether the slip, trip, or fall was at home, in the workplace, or in a public place, these premises liability cases often give you the right to bring a claim for damages incurred because of your injuries.
Protecting Your Tomorrows
Like the National Safety Council, the Gladstein Law Firm’s mission is to ensure that everyone is protected from preventable injuries and deaths. Although the first goal is to prevent accidents, we know from experience that many people are victims of accidents through no fault of their own. When a person is injured because someone else failed to take reasonable precautions at work or on the road, the consequences can be catastrophic for the whole family.
The Gladstein Law Firm’s experienced attorneys know that it is confusing and stressful to go through a serious injury. An attorney can help you figure out whether you have a claim and determine who is legally responsible for the condition that led to the accident. If you have questions about your situation, it is best to contact us as soon as possible. Contact attorney Seth Gladstein online by filling out our online contact form or calling us.
