Attorneys Aggressively Protecting the Rights of Kentucky Victims of DUI Accidents
There is plenty to be scared about on Halloween, but it is all in good fun.
From the costumes to the trick-or-treating to the parties. Halloween is all about celebration. But, Halloween also has the preponderance to turn into a nightmare for some – especially those who choose to drink and drive. While you cannot control everyone on the road with you (or even attending the same party), you can do your own part by not drinking and driving.
Alcohol is part of most Halloween festivities. So, do your part to not drink, or at least have a back-up plan if you do. And, know what to do if you are involved in an accident. Be proactive and realize the risks even if you aren’t drinking – and do what you can to avoid accidents of any kind altogether.
What You Can Do as a Driver
- Avoid driving during the trick-or-treating hours, if you can. This is when small children and teens tend to flood the streets, and they increase the likelihood of an auto-pedestrian accident.
- Obey all street signs and signals.
- When in a neighborhood, slow down and drive 10 miles below the posted speed limit when children are present.
- Do make sure that you and any friends attending the party have a designated driver before you leave. If you cannot secure one before leaving your house, plan on using a ride-sharing program.
What You Can Do as a Pedestrian
- Make sure you increase your visibility to cars in the dark. This may mean wearing a reflective costume or adding reflective tape to your costume.
- Use all crosswalks and sidewalks. Do not illegally cross the road – even if everyone else is doing it.
- Never enter the road from behind parked vehicles; cars may not see you.
- Do not drink before walking around. While it may be more dangerous to operate a vehicle, drinking and walking could make you less aware of what is going on around you.
Drinking and Driving is Not Worth the Risk
Impaired driving can cost you. Not only could you face criminal charges, but civil penalties as well. If you are injured as a victim in a drunken driving accident, the injuries could be extensive. Often, on Halloween, drunken driving incidents become hit-and-run accidents. Therefore, being proactive is a necessity for your health and safety.
If you have been injured on Halloween because of a drunken driver in a car accident, as a pedestrian, or even as a cyclist, you have rights.
